There’s nothing quite like a Disney film. From the distinct animation style (revolutionized several times over the studio’s history) to the memorable songs and scores to the multivalent messages and humor, the Disney canon has cemented an exceptional legacy in the pantheon of motion pictures, animated or otherwise.

The studio went through an artistic and commercial slump in the period following Walt Disney’s death in 1966, and by the 1980s, interest in animation films had waned. However, the arrival of new creative leaders and a return to storytelling fundamentals reinvigorated the company and ushered in a new run of classics. Modernizing well-known stories for a new generation and integrating hand-drawn cels with computer animation, this new era—dubbed “the Disney Renaissance”—not only restored the success of the studio’s animation department, but ignited a refreshed interest in the animation medium.

Building on our exploration of Disney’s early days in the first part of this class, we’ll examine the resuscitation of the brand by Walt Disney’s creative successors. As we explore Disney’s resurgence, we will revisit the seminal films of the Disney Renaissance—
The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), and The Lion King (1994)—and examine the beauty and magic now ingrained in the hearts of several generations.
