A Girl’s Best Friend: Female Friendship on Film
(PG) USA – 1 hr 26 min – 35mm
1978 · d. Claudia Weill   Reviews

Susan (Melanie Mayron) feels abandoned after her best friend, Anne (Anita Skinner), moves out of their shared apartment to get married. Left on her own, Susan struggles to carve out a life for herself and navigate a cast of friends and lovers, including an awkward boyfriend (Christopher Guest), a kindly rabbi (Eli Wallach), and a kooky roommate (Amy Wright). Initially unsuccessful but reappraised in recent years as a masterpiece of feminist film, Claudia Weill’s intimate portrait of friendship counts among its admirers Greta Gerwig, Lena Dunham, and Stanley Kubrick, who declared it “one of the most interesting American films I’ve seen in a long time.”
