To research O Brother, Where Art Thou?, his planned epic about the suffering of the everyman, comedy director John Sullivan (Joel McCrea) sets off to live among the down-at-the-heels, alongside a discouraged actress (Veronica Lake). However, the two keep landing back in Hollywood, and Sullivan’s attempts to understand authentic hardship are thwarted—until events drop him into trouble without a safety net.
