Starring Jason Robards, Mary Steenburgen, Paul Le Mat

Utah man Melvin Dummar (Paul Le Mat) gives a tousled motorist a lift after finding him stranded on a desert road. Nine years later, Dummar receives a handwritten will bequeathing him $156 million dollars from the stranger—reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes (Jason Robards). This lyrical portrait of blue-collar life follows ne’er-do-well Melvin as he lurches toward the American dream, bookended by the intrusions from Hughes. Jonathan Demme’s stranger-than-fiction romp garnered two Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Mary Steenburgen and Best Original Screenplay for Bo Goldman.

Shown in conjunction with the film course Once in a Lifetime: Jonathan Demme in the 1980s, each film in this series will be introduced by the course’s instructor, Lisa DeNight.
